    Has anyone had experience with the Stay fuse hammertoe implant?

    Hi Frank

    I have used it several times.

    It works very well and is well designed and gives a good dependable result.

    There are only a few things to avoid (which are well stated in their literature);

    You do not need to resect much bone

    You need to screw the implant components into the bone deep enough to get the bone to contact bone when it is snapped together but not so deep that the components can’t snap together (the design makes this easy to judge) and there is a special instrument set to ease fitting (but I have never used this).

    The slot in the distal component must be vertically aligned (and not horizontally aligned) or the bending forces on the toe will not be withstood and it could fail.

    Against this is the fact that it is very expensive and IP joint arthroplasty or IP joint arthrodesis with percutaneous K-wire, buried K-wire or cannulated screw usually gives good results and so the cost is really only justified if any slight axial rotation in the result needs to be avoided.

    All the best

    Tom
