    One thing strikes me about the gait guys' reference to a dorsiflexed great toe prior to footstrike and that is the lack of mention of the way in which footwear usually impedes this . This is an important part of the equation . Also , the idea that the dorsiflexors continue to be active through mid stance is not supported by the EMG values for these muscles at that stage .(Zelik)

    The evidence shows that the plantar intrinsics increase activity in response to postural demand thus resisting arch deformation at this stage .(Kelly)

    Once weight has been accepted onto the reference foot and the toes are on the ground , the toe extensors are quiet .
