Olympic great Michael Phelps fears he has never competed in a clean event during his glittering swimming career.

The most decorated Olympian of all time made the stunning claim when asked about the Russian doping controversy ahead of the Rio Games.

"We all want clean sports. That's all we want," Phelps told a packed Rio press conference on Wednesday.

"I can honestly say in my career I don't know if I've ever competed in a clean sport - it's upsetting."

The 18-time Olympic gold medallist said the Russian doping controversy indicated drug cheats were not just swimming's problem.

More than 100 Russians, including seven swimmers and the entire track and field team, have been banned from Rio.

But the Court of Arbitration for Sport still has more appeals to consider just days before the Rio Games.

"There's something that needs to change about all sports, not just swimming," Phelps said ahead of his fifth Games.

"As athletes you want to be able to compete on an even playing field."

"We've had this problem for how many Olympics? It seems almost every time something comes up."

"It's sad that we can't control it, that somebody who is in charge cannot control this."

Phelps' long time coach Bob Bowman claimed the "system is broken".

"It's very concerning to me that our governing bodies have dropped the ball in many ways on this," he said. "The system is broken and it has to be fixed."

I'm not wanting to focus on the drug issue (i.e. the negative) too much... but it's getting harder to avoid... & frankly it's starting to really irritate me now. There are the above views from Michael Phelps, there is the Russian issue... & there is the East African issue (particularly Kenya)... which strikes a bit closer to my heart as I've been in admiration of these athletes for a long time (since a teenager competing in events which the East Africans dominate). The following is a documentary from the Australian channel, SBS, from the program - Dateline. Titled: The Betrayal of Kenya's Athletes. The doc. is hosted by former Paralympian Ade Adepitan who also admired these athletes.

The corruption is apparently RIFE!... particularly within the organisation - Athletics Kenya!

Former Paralympian Ade Adepitan grew up in awe of Kenya's athletes, but was saddened to find a story of doping, cheating and corruption when he travelled there for Dateline's story.

Lifeguards at an event for the greatest swimmers on the planet may be akin to something like Christopher McDougall at a Podiatry conference (i.e. practically pointless)... but there was this one time at the Sydney 2000 Olympics where a Lifeguard may have got itchy feet... Equatorial Guinea competitor - Eric ("Eric the Eel") Moussambani swam the 100m freestyle...

Australia's Roy & HG commentating (Aussie style)...

But hey, as the "Olympic spirit" is rumoured to state... "The important thing is not to win, but to take part"... & "Eric the Eel" I suppose embodied that... which then reminds me of a Winter Olympic version - Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards.
