I'd be interested to know more about the post-op care and advice. Also, it would be interesting to have an overview of the average daily physical demands these patients experience and whether they were using orthoses etc.

I skimmed the article but looks like a very nice review. The article is about Weil's osteotomy but is also expanded to include modification so extensive that it is no longer a Weil osteotomy. This being the case, I didn't see any reference to the Schwartz modification, nor the MIS approach of co-axial decompression - this would have been nice, to see, in the discussion part. Especially the MIS approach. Contrast the extensive nature of transverse incisional surgical exposure for a pan-metatarsal (2-5) approach in contrast with the stab-incisional approach, as adopted in the MIS technique.
I enjoyed the technical analysis that demonstrates the very real difficulty of avoiding plantar-flexion of the distal fragment in spite of taking the assumed correctly applied precaution. I would almost always take a second cut to compensate.
Bottom line, this is an area of surgery very much dependent on a good & large measure of intraoperative judgment and speculation, in the absence of a reliable measurement. Intra-operative fluoroscopy can help, but will not provide for an appraisal of the stiffness element of the ray under load, to know definitively if the surgeon has done right, by the patient. -
