Firstly I would just like to say "Hi" to you all. I suspect that I will be using this site quite frequently as I am an undergrad Podiatry student in my 1st year, so please excuse my lack of knowledge if I end up posting questions that may seem very basic :/

However as I am revising currently for my exams next week, I am trying to familirise myself with Gait and gait abnormalities ...

In my tutorial notes I have come across a deformity called Tibial Varum, however when I google these words - it comes up with Genu Varum, so I am wondering if the tow are the same?

And could someone kindly expain to me in laymans terms what Tibial Varum is?

Hi Nicola,

The tibial varum is often accompanied by internal torsion of the tibiae (tibial torsion).

Tibial torsion can be identified by:

1. noting the patellae on the front of the legs (meaning that the femurs are not internally rotated)

2. the lateral malleolus will precede the medial malleolus (contrary to normal development) demonstrating the axial twist in the tibiae

The foot will be adducted and supinated, the gait intoeing
