Keraderm for onychomycosis

Is it possible to use the healing power of light to treat infections? Keraderm, a leader in the development of light-based treatments for infections, thinks so. Keraderm announced full enrollment for pivotal trials to obtain FDA clearance of its phototherapy treatment for onychomycosis (fungal nail infections). The objectives of the pivotal trials are to confirm the efficacy and safety of Keraderm's treatment for patients with onychomycosis.

Eighty-five subjects with confirmed onychomycosis have been enrolled in the prospective, placebo controlled, double blind, multi-site trial. Study objectives include assessing safety, clinical improvement, mycological cure and visual improvement of the treated nail. Patients will receive four twenty- minute treatments over a four-week period and will be followed up to assess safety and efficacy of the treatments after several months.

Keraderm's germicidal light technology has been clinically shown to successfully inactivate the organisms that cause onychomycosis. The results of Keraderm's collaboration with the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, on a grant from the National Institute of Health have recently been published in the prestigious peer-reviewed British Journal of Dermatology. The data indicate that Keraderm's treatment is effective at penetrating the nail and also inactivating the organisms that cause onychomycosis. Additionally, results of Keraderm's successful pilot clinical trials at Brigham and Women's Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, have been presented at the 2007 World Congress of Dermatology Conference and the 2008 American Academy of Dermatology Conference. These pilot clinical trials indicated significant improvement in 73% of subjects treated with its proprietary technology with no significant side effects. Keraderm anticipates an increased improvement rate in the current pivotal trials due to further enhancements of its technology.

Onychomycosis responds to systemic antifungals and sometimes to topical lacquers, but alternative treatments are desirable. Topical application of germicidal ultraviolet (UV) C radiation may be an acceptable and effective therapy for infected nails.

Objectives:To test the ability of UVC to inactivate dermatophyte suspensions in vitro and to sterilize a novel ex vivo model of nail infection.

Methods: Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum and Microsporum canis suspensions were irradiated with UVC (254 nm) at a radiant exposure of 120 mJ cm−2 and surviving colony-forming units quantified. T. rubrum infecting porcine hoof slices and human toenail clippings was irradiated with UVC at radiant exposures of 36-864 J cm−2.

Results: In vitro studies showed that 3-5 logs of cell inactivation in dermatophyte suspensions were produced with 120 mJ cm−2 UVC irradiation. Depending on factors such as the thickness and infectious burden of the ex vivo cultures, the radiant exposure of UVC needed for complete sterilization was usually in the order of tens to hundreds of J cm−2. Resistance of T. rubrum to UVC irradiation did not increase after five cycles of subtotal inactivation in vitro.

Conclusions: UVC irradiation may be a less invasive treatment option for onychomycosis, when the appropriate consideration is given to safety.

Dear All,

I personally my Australian Natural THERAPY treatment regime.:pigs:

This consists of Culture of the causative agent and then upon confirmation a pt specific regimen is devised.

I have the outcomes to be most satisfying and certainly patient compliance is exceedingly high.

There is however a very important consideration with regard to long term exposure to this particular modality.

Sit on a beach in Sydney for several hours for several days. The level of UV light will be sufficient to render all pathogens DECEASED.

Contra indications are Racial and Social Cultural due to the sensitivity of us fare skinned folk to extreme uv exposure. Also many cultures frown on exposure of body parts to other folk.:boohoo:

Hazards are SKIN CANCER.:butcher:

But so far results are good and it will be a while before skin cancer sets :deadhorse:in.:deadhorse:
