    The following is an interesting study & somewhat related to the above i.e. the knowledge/treatment (& ideally the prevention) of infectious & inflammatory diseases in endurance athletes... however, from a nutritional standpoint i.e. antioxidants. Albeit, looking at antioxidants in a different light - the apparent detrimental effects associated with the common high dosage supplementation form... whilst subsequently leading views to a more Nutrigenomically optimal method via a plant based/whole food form for optimal health benefits...

    Hence the group taking the vitamins (1000 mg of C, 400 IU of E) had their cell defences inactivated ("blocked") because it couldn't receive the signals telling it that it needed to activate... due to the excess levels/doses of the direct-acting antioxidants (vitamins i.e. C & E) which were well in excess of anything that could be consumed through the diet (there have been other studies done on excess stand-alone antioxidant/vitamin doses contributing to potential detrimental health results i.e. potential cancer).

    Quite a fascinating, albeit confusing... as well as disturbing topic... particularly when we live in an environment where the (multi-million $) vitamin/supplement industry endorses such practices (i.e. mega-doses of vit. C for winter ills)... endorsed because of the presumed health benefits thereof... where possibly the opposite effect could be happening in some cases i.e. mega-doses of vitamin intake (particularly stand-alone vitamins... without their associated/accompanying phytochemicals) causing more harm than good.

    It appears more & more apparent (through empirical science) that plant based/whole foods (where customary synergistic levels of vitamins, minerals & phytochemicals are packaged - as well as macronutrients i.e. protein, fat & carbohydrates) were best designed for our optimal diet for optimal health & well-being... hence why the field of Nutrigenomics is starting to take hold... particularly in the supplement/vitamin industry.
