My lovely wife and I just got back from a motorhome trip to Yosemite National Park. I thought some of you might want a new screensaver of Half Dome...what an awesome piece of rock!

Thanks for the memories Dr K. Love Yosemite (despite crashing a car in the park - it was a write-off).

Climbed to the top of Half Dome; as you say... "an awesome piece of rock!". The following photo is of us on top Half Dome... with Yosemite Valley waaaaay down below...

One has to marvel at the geology of the whole area. We just don't have that degree of awesomeness in Australia (i.e. rugged mountain ranges)... albeit, we have other cool features.

Spend a fantastic time there in January. Just like walking straight into a National Geographic photograph. A must experience.

  4. Ben - you're sitting on the cap at the top of Snake Dyke, one of the classic routes up the dome...

  5. Here are two more from our trip to Yosemite this last weekend. That's a pileated woodpecker, about 16" tall, one of the largest North American woodpecker species. The other one is a view of Half Dome from Glacier Point at about 7,000' elevation.

Forgive my ignorance but is half dome known to climbers as El Capitan, or is El Cap simply a portion of the whole?

    All the best

  9. El Capitan is an even bigger piece of granite on the other side of Yosemite Valley....it's the granddaddy of them all...

Thanks Kevin. I hope to get there one day but sadly, won't be doing any serious routes.

    All the best
