Do they come with a massive warning on the box saying: STEP IN DOG POO AT YOUR OWN RISK! What a bitch to clean......
-
-
First of all, they should be banned from elite/sporting competition.
Secondly, anybody training in those & then moving to a more conventional shoe will be severely disadvantaged (performance wise), potentially leading to a whole host of injuries.
I'd imagine they would also 'turn off' the Achilles tendons. -
Not sure what you mean by "turn off the Achilles' tendon"? Was unaware that you could "turn a tendon on". -
Beats the hell out of the Dellinger web:D!
(for those old enough to remember that far back..........) -
be cool if the springs could be tuned to the individual, maybe in the future
-
I designed one called W.A.N.K.E.D. but the Walking Assisted Non Kinetic Energy Device just couldn't get off the ground ;) -

-
;) -
Here is the Adidas press release:
-
If you let the shoes (springs) do the job of the tendons, I would imagine the tendons 'operating less efficiently', than when one wears regular shoes?.
People opting to train in these & then use regular shoes during competition, I predict disaster. -
So, spring efficiency is basically a ratio of the energy input versus the energy returned; hysteresis is a measure of the energy lost during a load unload cycle. In vivo hysteresis in tendons is independent of physiological function and loading (Maganaris CN. Tensile properties of in vivo human tendinous tissue. J Biomech. 35(8):1019-27, 2002.) How then does the wearing of this shoe alter the efficiency of the tendon to store and return energy and viz. modify the tendon's hysteresis characteristics?
One potential influence on tendon hysteresis could be from the rate of loading of the Achilles when wearing these shoes, however since we have no kinematic nor kinetic data, nor any data on the exact geometry nor load/ deformation characteristics of the Adidas shoe, one could only speculate. Indeed, the influence of loading rate on the mechanical properties of the Achilles tendon, while inconclusive, lean toward loading rate having little, if any influence on this tendons stiffness nor hysteresis characteristics: http://www.springerplus.com/content/2/1/212
You predict disaster based on what knowledge base? -
Here is how I deal with Sicknote's continuous stream of idiotic comments:
-
Aloha,
From the Official Press Release,
"Hundreds of materials were tested by aIT (adidas Innovation Team) to ensure each spring produced maximum energy efficiency with every step."
This statement is inaccurate.
We all know that advanced composite carbon fiber has a higher modulus of elasticity and energy return than any any polymer plastic or foam.
Kingetics has developed, tested and patented a new advanced composite "energy return" orthotic system that has been tested for the US Department of Defense and it is "inside" the shoe housing making dog dodo shoe clean up easier...
They also have a proven pucture resistance of up to 8000 Newtons.
I commend Adidas for looking away from foam and hope their shoe is allowed to run in any race they wish to run.
We will wait for the publishing and sharing of thier testing results to see if this shoe fufills the requirements for an advanced shoe system as suggested by Dr. Nigg in his book Biomechanics of Sport Shoes in Chapter 7 on Work and Energy.
"It should — it’s been six years in the making, undergoing hundreds of tests. The shoe launches Aug. 1 in seven different color combinations. It will retail for $180."

Here are the designers talking about the shoe:

I'm all over this. Can't wait to try them on. I'm especially interested in seeing how much frontal plane stability the shoes have.
This shoe is nothing more than a trainer. It should probably be used only on pavement or on a track. Don't see it as a trail shoe at all. This design could also potentially be beneficial as a post-race, recovery shoe. -

I'm waiting patiently for Simon Bartold to see this and chime in..

Looks like sales declining:

Brilliant, if they can keep people active then i am all for them.

Our local running shoe store, which is one of the largest in Northern California, does not carry this shoe. Maybe this shoe is a little too "out there" to be commonly available??

Now it comes in pretty colors:
adidas Launches the Springblade Heather Collection -
Forbes are reporting:
Adidas Commits To Nontraditional Springblade Line Of Running Shoes -
“It is very clear from a global perspective this is a two horse race for market share,” added Peveto, referencing an ongoing battle for market share between adidas and Nike.
Perhaps that was the last thing they heard the horse say at the car race... -
They have now released a heel only version:

This is a plea to all my fellow research scientists.
Footwear is changing and we will need better descriptors of shoes and orthotics that are being tested.
We cannot allow the use of the term "conventional running footwear" anymore.
Take the time to describe the footwear being tested.
For instance if it is a wedged 60 durometer EVA foam midsole with a 26mm rearfoot and 12 mm forefoot and 2mm toe off then call it that.
If we were in a basic chemistry lab we would use more scientific descriptors than "We used conventional reagent in our experiment."
Might as well just say you used blue shoes...
How can we validate your experiments if you don't tell us what you really used to test?
Is that just a big waste of money and time then?

Aloha,
They do look pretty much the same although the Sketchers is a third the price.
Does price affect function?
Did Sketchers use less "advanced" plastic materials to lower the price?

Someday shoe companies may find that a lever provides significantly more mechanical advantage than multiple leaf springs for gait and that a patent has already been established for that as well.

Aloha,
Now that there is a lawsuit in our public courts perhaps other owners of leaf spring technology will enter the fray as well.
Mr. Avini US Pat# 7,100,308 (assigned to Nike) has a patent on a single leaf spring shoe that mechanically resembles the leaf springs that Adidas is claiming Sketchers stole from them.
http://www.google.com/patents/US7100308
Mr. Van Phillips has multiple patents assigned to him with prosthetic leaf springs for gait systems that perhaps mechanically resembles the leaf springs that Nike has patented in shoes that Adidas is claiming Sketchers stole from them.
http://www.google.com/patents/US5549714
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Phillips_(inventor)
Yet none of them is utilizing an rocker lever that follows the mechanical equation:
Force x Distance = Force x Distance
Perhaps because that patent for use in shoes, orthotics, prosthetics, mechatronics, exoskeletons and robotics is being held by someone else and they would not want to infringe on someone else's Patented Intellectual Property.
Perhaps because using a lever for mechanical advantage during gait is too complex a concept for them since some shoe company's lawyers claim that they are just "marketing companies" or at least that is what they have said in the news when there are labor disputes and employee rights issues in the contracted factories that "make" their billions of foam shoes.
https://web.stanford.edu/class/e297c/trade_environment/wheeling/hnike.html
If you study what Mr. Knight studied at Stanford U. and read his masters thesis this may assist in understanding the current shoe markets and "technologies".
?Can Japanese Sports Shoes Do to German Sports Shoes What Japanese Cameras Did to German Cameras??
With the current market cap of his company at $100 billion who could claim he was wrong leading the industry in this direction?
https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:NKE&ei=D0OFV5mGJYejigLl0aGoCQ
What's a few patents on advanced gait technologies among billion dollar international conglomerates anyway?

Aloha,

I thank him for his leadership and innovations.

Aloha,
Perhaps the article missed this classic poach.
MBT vs Sketchers Shape Ups.
Perhaps MBT would still be in business if they would have had run adds like this one.

It is funny-odd-sad that supersized foam shoes started the current barefoot movement that have now morphed into the maximalism movement without changing the materials or designs much.
When marketing departments receive more funding than research departments be ready to start calling red blue and blue red.
A hui hou,
