INTRODUCTION:
The deep fibular sensory nerve can be recorded to evaluate for peripheral nerve injury, however it can be challenging in some individuals. Anatomic variation could account for some of this difficulty. Cadaver dissection and electrophysiologic testing was used to characterize deep and superficial fibular sensory nerve supply to the foot.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:
Nineteen feet from 15 (8 males and 7 females) cadavers were dissected to identify the deep fibular [and superficial fibular nerves.] Sensation to the first dorsal web space was tested electrophysiologically in 101 participants (31 males and 70 females) with an age range of 18 to 47 years with stimulation over both the deep and superficial fibular nerves.

RESULTS:
Eleven of the 19 (58%) cadaver limbs had a communication between the superficial and deep fibular nerves in the dorsum of the foot. [A] reliable sensory response [was recorded] in the first dorsal web space in 88% of the limbs tested. Deep fibular stimulation alone produced a response in 34% of the limbs, while superficial fibular stimulation alone produced a response in 10% of the limbs. A separate response with stimulation of both the deep and superficial fibular nerves was recorded in 44% of the limbs.

CONCLUSIONS:
A functional superficial to deep fibular sensory communication is present in a significant portion of the population. [Those with the communication may not have the isolated sensory loss that would be expected in the first dorsal web space in conditions impacting the deep fibular nerve.]

Purpose: To investigate variations in the branching patterns of the superficial fibular nerve (SFN) in
regard to the deep fascia of the leg and to the ankle joint level.
Methods: A broad literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, and Web of Science
databases on October 14

, 2021. PRISMA guidelines have been followed throughout this review. Articles
with data on SFN variations prevalence were included. The data were extracted and pooled into a metaanalysis. The authors also dissected a total of 64 formalin-fixed Brazilian fetuses (n = 124 lower limbs).
Results: Twenty-five studies (n = 1272 lower limbs) comprised this review. Concerning the SFN branching
at the deep fascia, type 1 variation (the SFN pierces the fascia as a single nerve trunk) had a pooled
prevalence of 86.4% (95% CI 84.5-88.2), while type 2 had a pooled prevalence of 13.6% (95% CI 11.8-
15.5). At the ankle joint level, type 2 variation (the SFN splits in its terminal branches after cross the joint)
was the most common pattern, with a pooled prevalence of 78.7% (95% CI 74.5-82.7).
Conclusion: In the most prevalent anatomical pattern, the SFN branching between its exit site from the
deep fascia and the level of the ankle joint. These variants have great clinical significance.
