I have a new patient I will be visiting next week, an 8 year old girl who dances and is complaining of corns.
I'm less than a year graduated and have never come across a child as young as this with soft tissue pathology. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Difficult to know what to say without more detail. Are they hard or soft? Specific location? Also what type of dance, training schedule, footwear? Appreciate you may not know any of this until you see the patient.

My first impression is that they won't be 'corns', but just bursa or prominent exostoses around the joint. Who actually said they were 'corns'? The parents?

OK this is a little embarrassing but in my first year out, I remember a young girl who presented with a painful soft tissue lump on the lateral 5th toe. I diagnosed it as a corn - my thinking was it is the classic location. It didn't respond to conservative treatment so I referred to a podiatric surgeon, only to be set straight - it was a verruca. And it was a classic verruca, I couldn't believe how dumb I had been. OK very embarrassing!

Not yet seen patient, and i am dubious that it is corns. Everyone seems to think they have them!
I haven't had a great deal of exposure to pediatrics outwith University and even that was limited, so my confidence in this area isn't the best.
Thanks everyone for your advice, and hey it could be a verruca! That wont cause me too much worry!

Agreed !! so many miss diagnosis from GP's, friends , family, parents, pharmacists etc
Go and see it and think of the probabilities after examination.
Don't have pre conceived ideas, clinical judgment is all :drinks
