Validity and reliability of the Greek version of the Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale - Short Form (DFS-SF).

OBJECTIVE:
Diabetic foot ulcer is a critical and costly complication of diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the diabetic foot ulcer scale - short form (DFS-SF).
DESIGN:
A sample of patients with diabetic foot ulcer (N=110) was surveyed with the DFS-SF and various demographic and disease-related questions. The validated Greek SF-36 instrument was used as a "gold standard" for health-related quality of life comparisons. Hypothesized scale structure, internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and various forms of construct validity (convergent, discriminative, concurrent and known--groups) were assessed.
RESULTS:
Multitrait scaling confirmed the scale structure of the DFS-SF, with 32 excellent item convergence (100%) and good discrimination (84.1%) rates. Cronbach's alphawas >0.70 for all scales. Spearman's correlations between similar DFS-SF and SF-36 scales ranged between 0.39-0.79 (p<0.001). Expected interscale correlations and known-groups comparisons supported construct validity.
CONCLUSIONS:
The observed psychometric properties of the Greek DFS-SF imply suitability for assessing health-related quality of life in patients with diabetic foot ulcer. Future studies should focus on generalizability of the results, as well as on specific issues such as longitudinal validity and responsiveness.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Diabetic Foot Scale-Short Form (DFS-SF). The study was cross-sectional and conducted between January and October 2019 in a diabetic foot council of a university hospital. A total of 194 diabetic foot patients participated in the study. A Patient Identification Form and DFS-SF were used for data collection. Forward and backward translations were used in language validity. Expert opinions were obtained to determine the Content Validity Index. To determine construct validity, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used. Cronbach's α internal consistency coefficient, item-scale correlation, and test-retest reliability were used to evaluate reliability. It was found that Content Validity Index was 0.97 (0.86-1.00), the factor loading of scale varied from 0.378 to 0.982, Cronbach's α value varied from 0.81 to 0.94, and item-total correlations were between 0.30 and 0.75. The Turkish version of the DFS-SF was found valid and reliable to measure the quality of life of diabetic foot patients.

Background: The quality of life (QoL) of diabetic foot ulcer patients is worse than that of diabetic patients. The Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale-Short Form (DFS-SF) is a readily available instrument used to evaluate the quality of life of diabetic foot ulcer individuals. The aim of this study was to translate the DFS-SF into Chinese, followed by an evaluation of its validity and reliability.

Methods: This study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, we followed the Brislin's Translation and Back-translation model to translate the DFS-SF into Mandarin Chinese. In the second phase, we examined the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the DFS-SF, where the reliability was assessed in terms of Cronbach's α coefficient, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability, and validation of the scale was carried out through content validity, structure validity and criterion validity approaches.

Results: A total of 208 participants were recruited for our study. The item-level content validity index (I-CVI) of the Chinese version of the Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale varied from 0.800 to 1.000, the average scale-level content validity index (S-CVI/Ave) was 0.911, and the Cronbach's α coefficient of the scale was 0.952. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated good structural validity of the scale, with a Comparative Fit Index (CFI) = 0.920 and a root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of 0.069 (p < 0.001). The criterion-related validity results indicated that the subscales were significantly related to the subscales of the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), with coefficients ranging from 0.116 to 0.571 (p < 0.05).

Discussion: The translation and the examination of the scale rigidly followed the golden standard model, and the reliability observed in our study was similar to that of other studies. Furthermore, the validity assessment indicated that the scale structure was reliable. Therefore, the proposed scales may serve as a reliable instrument for the quality of life evaluation in the diabetic foot ulcers population.

Conclusion: The adaptation and validation of the Chinese version of the Diabetic Foot Ulcers Scale-Short Form were reliable, and it will be a reliable instrument to evaluate the QoL of Chinese diabetic foot ulcer patients.

Validity and reliability of Chinese version of the new diabetic foot ulcer assessment scale

A specific assessment tool is urgently needed to guide effective wound care for diabetic foot ulcers. However, the tool has not been available in Chinese. We aimed to culturally translate and verify the validity and reliability of the new Diabetic Foot Ulcer Assessment Scale (DFUAS). The original scale was translated into Chinese according to the Brislin guidelines. Patients satisfying the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited. Each of the included foot ulcers was evaluated independently by two wound care specialists using the new DFUAS and by the third wound care specialists at the same time using the Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool according to per guidelines. 210 diabetic foot ulcers were included for data analysis. The S-CVI of the Chinese version of the DFUAS was 0.96, and the I-CVIs ranged from 0.89 to 0.98. The total Cronbach's Alpha of the scale was 0.709, and the corrected item-total correlation of the items ranged from 0.4 to 0.872. The DFUAS had high inter-observer reliability of 0.997, and there were weak, moderate, and strong correlations between each pair of the items. The Bland–Altman plots showed a good agreement between the scale and the Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool. We concluded that the Chinese version of the DFUAS showed good validity and reliability and is a reliable instrument for the assessment of diabetic foot ulcers.
