Foot orthoses are increasingly used by runners despite the controversy about whether its use can reduce the risk of overuse injuries. Some authors have found modifications in plantar pressures with the use of foot orthoses, which could produce changes in surface skin temperature of the foot soles. The aim of the study was to analyse the effects of custom-made and prefabricated foot orthoses on skin temperature of different regions of both foot soles after running. Twenty-four participants carried out a maximal aerobic speed test as a pre-test, and three running tests at the laboratory wearing different foot orthoses conditions (control, prefabricated and custom-made) previously randomized. Skin temperature of four regions of interest of the foot soles was assessed before, immediately after and ten minutes after running. The use of prefabricated and custom-made foot orthoses did not produce changes on skin temperature of the foot soles neither in absolute temperatures (p&gt;0.05), nor in temperature variations: between immediately after and before running (p&gt;0.05), and between ten minutes after and immediately after running (p&gt;0.05). Otherwise, there were found higher values with no insoles than with prefabricated foot orthoses, 10 min after running in relation to before running, in forefoot [Average (standard deviation): 5.6 (2.4) vs 3.7 (2.7)°C; p=0.02; Effect Size (ESd) = 0.72], midfoot [3.7 (1.5) vs 2.7 (1.5)°C; p=0.03; ESd = 0.65] and rearfoot [4.18 (2.05) vs 2.9 (1.82)°C; p=0.02; ESd = 0.64)]. In conclusion, the use of foot orthoses, in general, do not affect the surface skin temperature of the foot soles after an intense run.

There is a lack of evidence about the effect of different type of foot orthoses on plantar surface temperature. Moreover, that effect could be different depending on gender due to anatomical and physiological differences between men and women. The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of a thermoformable prefabricated foot orthosis on plantar surface temperature after running and taking gender differences into account. Thirty recreational runners (15 males, mean (standard deviation): 28 (7) years, 69.7 (6.5) kg, 1.74 (0.05) cm and 22.9 (1.7) kg/m2; and 15 females: 35 (7) years, 55.2 (6.9) kg, 1.63 (0.06) cm and 20.6 (1.9) kg/m2) carried out a maximum incremental test as pre-test, and two running tests on a treadmill at the laboratory wearing previously randomized different foot orthoses (thermoformable and prefabricated generic). The plantar surface temperature of the dominant foot sole in ten regions of interest was assessed before and immediately after 30-min running at 75% of VO2max. The use of thermoformable foot orthoses produced lower temperatures only in men after the run in medial heel (P = 0.033, ES = 0.7), which then disappeared in temperature variation (after – before) (P = 0.910). Regarding gender, women showed lower temperatures before the run in both orthosis conditions (P < 0.039, ES > 0.8), but no differences in temperatures after the run (P = 0.910) in comparison with men. Moreover, absolute temperatures after running were always greater than before the run (P < 0.001, ES > 5.0). In conclusion, the thermoformable foot orthoses do not modify plantar surface temperature after running in healthy runners of either gender, compared to prefabricated generic foot orthoses. Although women present lower baseline plantar temperatures than men, these differences disappear after exercise.

Acute effect of induced asymmetrical running technique on foot skin temperature

The aim of the study was to evaluate skin temperature of the soles of the feet before and after a provoked asymmetrical running. Seventeen recreational male runners performed two 15 min running tests in the same session. In the first test, participants performed running without modifying their running technique (control condition). In the second running test, they repeated the same protocol using an ankle weight of 1.5 kg in the non-dominant ankle (asymmetrical condition). Rate of perceive exertion, heart rate and spatio-temporal parameters were measured during the running tests. Skin temperature was measured with an infrared camera before and after each condition. Generally, comparing both lower limbs, non-preferred limb (with the ankle weight) had lower contact time (p < 0.001 and ES > 0.8), higher stride length (p < 0.05 and ES > 0.3) and higher stride frequency in asymmetrical condition (p < 0.01 and ES > 0.4). However, no differences were observed on skin temperature between both feet in the two conditions in any of the regions of interest assessed (p > 0.05). Although the asymmetry generation model used provoked technical asymmetries in spatio-temporal parameters during running, no thermal asymmetries were observed between preferred and non-preferred sole of the foot. These results suggested the lower importance of mechanical than physiological mechanisms on skin temperature during running.

During running, heat production in the footwear can be responsible for various pathologies such as phlyctenes. The sole that interposes between the foot and the shoe seems to be decisive. The comparison of the temperature recorded inside the footwear equipped with two different soles (ortholeage sole with an EVA coating and latex sole) out of 16 participants during a 10-km-race shows, on the one hand, that the temperature may rise up to six degrees and then holds steady at kilometre 6, and, on the other hand, that there are no differences between the two soles. These results can comfort professionals in the choice of EVA recovery.

Traditional insole materials which trap heat and moisture inside footwear cause discomfort to the wearer. Here, a novel textile-fabricated insole material with a 3D structure that offers good porosity and breathability for improving the footwear microclimate is proposed. Changes in foot skin temperature and humidity when wearing the textile-fabricated insole throughout treadmill walking are collected from 21 female subjects (age: 25.5 ± 4.5) and compared with traditional and 3D printed insoles. Subjective assessment of their perceived thermal comfort with various insole conditions is also conducted. In comparison to polyurethane, 3D printed thermoplastic polyurethane and leather insoles, textile-fabricated insoles show no significant changes in foot skin temperature. Nevertheless, a significant reduction of the relative humidity of the skin of the sole (3.21%) and heel (24.41%) is found. The findings are a valuable reference for the fabrication of insoles with higher wear comfort.

Thermal Differences in the Plantar Surface Skin of the Foot after Using Three Different Lining Materials for Plantar Orthotics

The lining materials of plantar orthoses are chosen for their hardness, breathability, and moisture absorption, but without there being any clear scientific criterion. Thermographic analysis would provide information about the thermal response of the sole of the foot, and would thereby allow the choice to be adapted in accordance with this criterion. The objective of this study was to evaluate plantar temperatures after the use of three materials with different characteristics. Plantar temperatures were analyzed by using a FLIR E60BX thermographic camera on 36 participants (15 men and 21 women, 24.6 ± 8.2 years old, 67.1 ± 13.6 kg, and 1.7 ± 0.09 m). Measurements were made before and after (3 h) the use of three lining materials for plantar orthoses (Material 1: PE copolymer; Material 2: EVA; Material 3: PE-EVA copolymer) on different days. For Material 1 (PE), the temperature under the heel was significantly higher after exercise, increasing from 30.8 ± 2.9 °C to 31.9 ± 2.8 °C (p = 0.008), and negative correlations were found between room temperature and the pre/post temperature difference for the big toe (r = -0.342, p = 0.041) and the 1st metatarsal head (r = -0.334, p = 0.046). No significant pre/post temperature differences were found with the other materials. The three materials thermoregulated the plantar surface efficiently by maintaining the skin temperature at levels similar to those evaluated before exercise. If PE is used as a lining material, it should be avoided for the heel area in patients with hyperhidrosis or those with a tendency to suffer from skin pathologies due to excess moisture.
