    Hi

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on some runners for a child with high ankle support. I have a 9 year old child who has lateral ankle instability. He is also quite obese. The only shoes he can find currently are basketball boots. Does anyone know of any other shoes that he could wear to school and run in easily ?

    Hope you can help.

    Thanks Linda

    Thank you Craig.
If your wanting a school shoe, ROC are "Board lasted" with a firm heel counter, the style Strobe has a broad midfoot and reasonable leather as does the Aussie brand Bilby, style Ortho.

For a runner, again with a broad midfoot, maybe the Newbalance 625, 624 or 857. All three styles have a reasonable midfoot width, firm heel counter and a good leather upper that will sustain him better long term, been available in all black may help with addressing the school uniform code also.

Have you done an orthoses for him?
Basket ball boots are a great start, will the school not allow him to wear them?

If these dont seem supportive or wide enough, there are also a number of Pedorthic modification we could apply.
You could have the the lateral "heel flare"? It is visual.
You could do a "relasting" where we can make the shoe/runner up to 15mm wider at the sole? Not visual
It depends how bad he is rolling that ankle?
You can see some examples of relasting and other shoe mods on our FB page, you may have to scroll down a bit, to October 12/2016

Thanks for the great advice. I'll be speaking the Mum again soon so at least now I'll have some options for her.
I think the school will allow basketball boots, however the Mum was keen for something else. Until now he has been wearing basketball boots with orthotics. He has had no ankle pain or recent episodes of rolling his ankles so I think the current orthotics are working well no need for any relasting at this stage. Thanks again
