Hi all, was wondering if someone could clear up some confusion over the movement of the fibula.

Danenburg in his vasyli article on manipulation of the ankle suggests that as the ankle dorsiflexes the fibula moves up and laterally to widen the mortice and allow the talus the required range of motion.

However Michaud in his foot orthosis book tells us that in late mid stance the fibula drops as it externally rotates to deepen the mortice and stabilise the ankle.

So which is it? and how do we test to see if it is functioning properly?

    Any answers gratefully received!

    Thanks folks

I had not previously picked up on that difference, but more inclined to go along with Dananberg's version.

    Do this:
Find the head of your fibula and put finger on it. Dorsiflex and plantarflex the foot --> feel fibula move up with dorsiflexion --> what Dannenberg said.
