HOS (Homosexual Onychocryptosis Syndrome), widely referred to as GITS (Gay Ingrown Toenail Syndrome) is a condition that as its name suggests primarily affects the Homosexual population.

The discovery of GITS originated through the work of the Sydney based podiatrist,
{name removed}. Through his years of work in his clinic in Surry Hills, he noticed
A trend in the many patients who consulted him for treatment for their ingrown toenails, a very high proportion of these were homosexual. To further his observation he decided to organise research in a variety of other clinics around Sydney, rural New South Wales, Brisbane, Melbourne and some International clinics in New Zealand, United Kingdom and Canada.

The results from his observations and research led him to the conclusion that there was an abnormal proportion of homosexuals in the patients who were observed.

In 1998 this anomaly was widely recognised by a number of leading experts in the field. This led the way for a number of theories to emerge and further research to develop an explanation for this anomaly.

The same podiatrist who discovered this condition, {name removed}, was the one who came up with the most widely accepted theory as to the cause of the ingrown toenails.

In a paper released in 2001, he stated that this condition was due to the nature of sexual activity performed in the homosexual community, specifically the males.

A very interesting observation came from one small village in Canada which was populated with mostly African Americans, GITS in this village was more common and also much more severe. A friend of podiatrist {name removed} who conducted the research in that area deduced that this was due to the large size of the mens appendages in comparison to the other men observed.

I assume it was someone having a dig at the particular named podiatrist (hence removing the name in the above).
