I can get statistical info from the HPC on the number of Chiropody / Podiatry registrants there are. Is there anyway of determining how many FHP´s we have in the UK. It would seem that there are only (several) voluntary registration sites....and no actual figures. can anyone throw any light on this ?

The answer to the question is no. What is an FHP? An FHP ranges from someone who has no training at all, to someone who could legally, properly and appropriately describe themselves as a chiropodist or podiatrist but has taken the opportunity to avoid paying for the questionable privilege of HPC registration. Thus, legislation, designed to clarify a matter has suceeded in obscuring it.

Some - inevitablt inaccurate - figures might be obtained by counting the entries in local telephone directories and local papers, but nationally, it would be a mammoth task.

Agreed.

If an FHP is "someone who treats feet for money" you would have to include all those advertising as such, Age concern "volunteers", nurses who do it for their favourite clients, pedicurists, carers, the list goes on!

I'm afraid you are on a hiding to nothing with this one.

You could contact all the private trainers and ask them how many students they train a year, but - even if they were to let you have that information - it wouldn't tell you have many were trading at any one time.

I think I recall a pod who did some research on FHP training for a thesis, I think. If I can find out who it was I'll get back to you.

Alternatively, if they see this post I hope they will contact you.

Thank You for you post....Yes, I am beginning to think you are absolutely right ! I am doing some research on simple nail spike removal, from a maintenance point of view. As part of this research I wanted to ascertain how many Pods on the HPC register had L.A Licence....That part was relatively easy. the HPC were very helpful. The info is there for all to view, but without their help it would have been time consuming to access.
Then a colleague pointed out that FHPs also treat Ingrown nails. I have contacted a few FHP colleges, but they seem very reluctant to reveal numbers or indeed the type of treatment they teach for this condition.

Sadly, the more I research this area, the more I have to agree with previous comments here that the HPC have created yet another "Them & Us" situation by just protecting our title and not our practices.

I do beleive that there is a need for a system that incorporates both Pods and FHPs, but the latter are doing their profile no good whatsoever in my opinion in being so secretive......what is there to hide ?

With regard to my undergrad dissertation; this was a purely qualitative piece of research on the role of the FHP in the Foot Care Industry; from the FHPs perspective. I purposely did not explore the training of FHPs as this varies vastly, depending upon where and when they trained.
