Hi there,

I just realised one of my lovely patients must have had pen written on their hand. It has transferred to the upholstery of my Midmark Podiatry couch 417. I've tried alcohol-wipes, soapy water, Pine-O-Cleen multipurpose cleaner - but nothing seems to be removing it.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any tips on how to remove it?

The good wife will be the first to tell you what a slob I am when it comes to the housework (...which reminds me, there is some wet washing in the washing machine!), so I certainly not the go to person when to comes to stain removal. However, I am the expert in diversionary tactics when it comes to those sort of things, so to divert my attention from the wet washing, I got onto Google:

This reminds me of an episode of Big Bang theory in which Penny stained Sheldon's ...."you are in my spot":

 

I had a hell of a job removing shoe blacking stains from the back seat of my 2 + 2 Jag. (shouldn't take adults in it)! Tried all of the above with no luck, but what did work was WD40. You won't need much but it's always good stuff to have around anyway.

I have been a fan of WD-40 for a long time - hence I also would use this in the above scenario. I rarely use WD-40 for its more common electrical uses (i.e. protection, lubrication)... but use it to clean things. It's great for removing those stubborn sticky residue marks left behind from stickers/labels (which the likes of methylated Spirits have little impact on).

I take it the Podiatry chair covering is of vinyl (as is mine), hence I would make a biro/pen mark in an inconspicuous area (i.e. back/underneath of chair) & try a small amount of WD-40 on it (i.e. sprayed on a cloth/paper towel) & rub over the biro/pen marks. Also best to have another cloth/paper towel handy with water or small amount of metho to wipe away the WD-40 oily residue. Whilst I can't recall using WD-40 on vinyl, I have used it on my writing table to remove pen marks - & it did the job.

You should be able to pick up a can at the supermarket i.e. Coles, Woolworths, Target etc. (if not, the hardware store)...

 

I use eucalyptus oil, also good for those sticky labels

Im with dsfeet, eucalyptus oil always works for me.... now what about sliver nitrate?

 

Methylated spirits is good for removing biro marks. Do check in an obscure area to make sure that it doesn't affect the vinyl.
