IMPROVEMENTS to the chiropody service in Axminster was one of the key issues raised at a public meeting about changing health services.

More than 140 people attended the meeting at the Guildhall for those interested in taking part in the Blue Sky Project being run by East Devon Primary Care Trust.

Dr Phil Taylor, of Axminster Medical Practice, is leading the pilot scheme, which is also being run in Seaton and Exmouth.

The aim of the project is to give patients the chance to help improve health provision by offering positive ideas from their own experience.

Dr Taylor said: "We had a fantastic response for the meeting, especially when compared with other types of consultation meetings for health.

"We were pleased people were able to identify areas and provide good reasons to get some improvement.

"There were some very strong feelings about chiropody services, especially that there should be organised appointments made in Axminster rather than organised centrally.

"We are working with the primary care trust in trying to improve the capacity of the service."

Dr Taylor said he expected other issues to be raised through written responses to the project.

He said: "Quite a number of people volunteered to take the forms to those who could not attend and I would expect more detail to come from the forms.

"We will take any issues raised and try to make something happen.

"If nothing happens then people are not going to stay involved and we want to create change as quickly and as practically as possible."

Issues raised by the public will be analysed and Dr Taylor said the project might include further consultation meetings.

He also said Axminster was taking part in it because it was one of the early adopters of practice-based commissioning for health and social care but he expected other practises in East Devon to follow on.
