Jacksonville Podiatrist Pleads Guilty To Stealing Federal Funds

A Jacksonville podiatrist faces prison time for stealing millions in Medicaid and Medicare funds by submitting false claims, including for people who were dead.

Bruce Friedman admitted he committed fraud over a six-year period by billing for services he never provided in visits he never made. He claimed to have performed work actually done by an unlicensed employee and billing for more expensive procedures than performed.

Friedman billed Medicare for 297 services on 38 patients who had died.

During his hearing, Friedman said he had a drug addiction and blamed his crimes on poor judgment.

Friedman has pleaded guilty to two counts of health care fraud and obstructing an IRS investigation by filing false business expenses.

Friedman faces up to 23 years in prison, although his plea agreement calls for a lighter sentence.

The doctor also must pay $1.5 million in restitution, including another $1 million for false claims and $500,000 in overpayments from Medicaid and Medicare.

The restitution must be paid 30 days before sentencing, which has not been set. He must also forfeit his medical license.
