Millions of Dollars Wasted on Unnecessary Medical Tests: Study

  2. What a waste of an article! They totally missed out on the main reason why too many tests are ordered by physicians in the States. This reason is that a reasonable doctor will order as many tests as they can to diagnose a condition in order to cover their behinds from being liable in potential malpractice claims.

No one will sue you for doing too many tests and, in fact, you look like a "good, concerned doctor" if you order more tests than normal. However, if you didn't order a $1,200.00 MRI scan soon enough on that patient that had what you thought was a benign soft tissue tumor that turned out, in fact, to be malignant, then you will likely be getting a little "friendly mail" from the plaintiff's attorney in the next year or so.

What do they need to do to lower the cost of medical care in the States??? Simple! Make the patient pay for the costs of court and attorney if they bring a frivolous malpractice suit to bear on a physician that is eventually vindicated of any wrong doing. That will then keep all of us physicians from needing to perform uneccessary tests to cover our behinds from the plaintiffs attorneys, will drastically cut the cost of providing good medical care and will bring more sanity to the out-of-control tort system in the States.http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_11/b3924601.htm
