Hi everyone
after qualifying as a FCA in the NHS a few yesrs ago i am now trying to start out on my own! i am looking to get work in care homes and alike. I will obviously just be providing basic footcare but thankfully have my old colleugues at hand if anything else comes up! I am still in the early stages of getting things set up so any adivce on where to buy instruments and what to do in terms of sterilisation??
any help or advice would be most welcome!!

Your post puzzles me and raises quite a few questions.

I am not sure what you mean by a FCA, is it a Society of Chiropodists training course?
If so, you will have been required to sign a declaration, before training, stating that you would not treat members of the public for fee or reward. This was a condition of your training. If you breach this then your training organisation could well ask for the fee back.

In any event, your training as a Foot Care Assistant is just that, an Assistant not a stand-alone practitioner. You were trained to assist the podiatrist and work under supervision, all patients sent to you will have been screened first and a pod was on hand to take patients back if need arose. You have not been trained to work independently, so how do you think you will cope out in the field?

Who will provide you with insurance?

Bear in mind that there is no such thing as "simple footcare" in nursing homes where the majority of the service users are elderly, infirm, with polypharmacy and lower limb pathologies. As you have never been taught how to manage a high-risk patient, what you propose is way above your scope of practice.

If you want to do "simple footcare" why not train as a pedicurist ?
