Govt to spend $16m on public hospital surgery

The New South Wales Government says it will spend an extra $16 million on surgical procedures in public hospitals.

The Government has also announced significant cuts in surgery waiting lists compared to this time last year.

The number of people waiting for booked surgery has dropped by about 12.5 per cent, while there is less than half as many long-wait patients.

Premier Morris Iemma says the extra funding will be used to make further inroads into waiting lists.

"It's part of our determination to drive further improvement," he said.

"Further investment with dollars, backing our nurses and doctors so they can continue to improve the speed and the efficiency within which surgery is done within our hospitals, leading to a further reduction in the waiting lists."

Public happy with hospitals, Govt says

The South Australian Government is talking up the results of a national health survey which shows high levels of public confidence in the hospital system.

Over 75 per cent of respondents in the latest Ipsos survey on healthcare and insurance said they had confidence in public hospitals.

The survey results show that while South Australia has one of the shortest waiting periods for treatment when compared to other states, waiting times are actually much longer now than a decade ago.

But Health Minister John Hill says the figures prove the public is happy with public hospitals.

"If you look at it in an objective way, and that's what these figures enable us to do, you can see that the overwhelming number of people are satisfied and very happy with the health system," he said.

"Obviously we can do more and we will do more."

But Opposition health spokesman Robert Brokenshire says the Government is using the figures to cover up problems in the health system.
