The goal of this study was to investigate plantar foot sensitivity and balance control of ADHD (n=21) impaired children compared to age-matched healthy controls (n=25). Thresholds were measured at 200Hz at three anatomical locations of the plantar foot area of both feet (hallux, first metatarsal head (METI) and heel). Body balance was quantified using the length, area and velocity described by the center of pressure (COP) during two-legged as well as one-legged stand (right and left legs). The comparison of vibration thresholds showed no differences between ADHD and healthy children at all anatomical locations of both feet. Whereas COP excursion and area were significantly lower in ADHD subjects compared to the healthy controls during two-legged stand, no differences were found in those variables when balancing on one leg. No differences in COP velocity between ADHD and healthy children were found in any analyzed conditions. The results indicate that the unusual and simple test situation may have increased the perception of vibration stimuli by the ADHD children. Furthermore, ADHD subjects seem to be less variable when performing simple tasks than healthy controls.

In this study, we tested for deficits in somatosensory function in boys with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and tactile defensiveness (TD). The subjects were 67 boys with ADHD, sub-typed as TD (ADHD+TD+) or non TD (ADHD+TD-), matched with 60 "typical" children in the control group. Sixty nine percent of the boys with ADHD were categorized as TD. The groups were compared on three measures: (a) performance scores on subtests of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test, (b) measurements of the Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SEP) and (c) ratings of the children's affective responses during tactile stimulation. Both ADHD groups differed from the control group on most study measures. No significant differences were found between the two ADHD subgroups on threshold and perceptual tests scores, except for Finger Identification. However, the TD+ group demonstrated significantly higher central SEP amplitudes than did the TD- group. Together, the results support claims that TD is related to central processing of somatosensory information, but not to anomalous tactile perception, with the exception of Finger Identification.

Background
Previous findings showed a tendency toward higher gait variability in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to controls. This study examined whether gait variability in children with ADHD eventually approaches normality with increasing age (delay hypothesis) or whether these gait alterations represent a persistent deviation from typical development (deviation hypothesis).

Method
This cross-sectional study compared 30 children with ADHD (25 boys; Mage = 10 years 11 months, range 8–13 years; n = 21 off medication, n = 9 without medication) to 28 controls (25 boys; Mage = 10 years 10 months, range 8–13 years). Gait parameters (i.e. velocity and variability in stride length and stride time) were assessed using an electronic walkway system (GAITRite) while children walked at their own pace.

Results
Children with ADHD walked with significantly higher variability in stride time compared to controls. Age was negatively associated with gait variability in children with ADHD such that children with higher age walked with lower variability, whereas in controls there was no such association.

Conclusions
Children with ADHD displayed a less regular gait pattern than controls, indicated by their higher variability in stride time. The age-dependent decrease of gait variability in children with ADHD showed that gait performance became more regular with age and converged toward that of typically developing children. These results may reflect a maturational delay rather than a persistent deviation of gait regularity among children with ADHD compared to typically developing children.

The Effect of Foot Massage by Mother on the Severity of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Children Aged 6-12

Background: Various pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches have been proposed to control the symptoms of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of foot massage by a mother on the severity of ADHD symptoms in children.

Materials and methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial conducted on 56 children who referred to psychiatric clinics affiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran, 2018. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups of intervention and control. In the intervention group, after giving massage therapy training to the mother, the mother massaged her child's foot three times a week for 1 month. The data were collected using the ADHD questionnaire. Data were analyzed using inferential and descriptive statistics (independent t-test, paired t-test, Mann-Whitney test, and Chi-square test).

Results: Comparison of the mean score of ADHD symptoms, after the intervention, showed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the dimensions of the memory and attention deficit (t47 = 3.42, p = 0.001), lack of responsibility and organization (t47 = 7.16, p < 0.001), lack of cooperation with others (t47= 5.23, p < 0.001), and the total score of symptom severity (t47 = 3.78, p < 0.001).

Conclusions: Massage therapy is affordable and low-cost care that together with pharmacotherapy programs can reduce some symptoms of ADHD.

Effect of textured foot orthoses on walking plantar pressure variables in children with autism spectrum disorders

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of textured foot orthoses on plantar pressure variables in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Thirty boys were divided into two groups based on their health status, namely: autism spectrum disorder and healthy matched controls. Plantar pressure data were captured during stance phases of shod walking with and without textured foot orthoses. Remarkably larger peak force under the toe1 and metatarsal1 and peak pressure under the toe1 and toe2-5 regions were observed in the autism group comparing with the healthy group, while lower peak force under the toe1, metatarsal1 and metatarsal2 were seen during walking with textured foot orthoses comparing with the cases of walking without them. The results showed higher values of peak pressure under metatarsal3, metatarsal4 and metatarsal5 for the textured foot orthoses walking against the cases without them. Also, analysis depicted huge reductions from pre-to-posttest for the peak pressure under toe2-5 only cases within the autism group. The reason of observing higher peak values of forces and pressures within their forefoot can potentially be their tendency to walk on their toes comparing against the healthy control children. This causes lower pressure values within all toes and the first metatarsal regions during normal walking with textured foot orthoses than walking without them. The findings revealed that the use of textured foot orthoses reduced peak pressure under toe2-5 only in the autism group. This suggests that the use of such interventions can help boys with ASDs move more safely.
