Podiatrist Peter Collins has been struck off the HCPC Register for a number of failings related to patient treatment, communication and record keeping whilst working as a Podiatrist in the Older People’s Directorate at NHS Bolton.
A panel of the HCPC Conduct and Competence Committee heard that Peter Collins did not provide prompt treatment to two patients because he failed to call for them adequately. He also did not demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patients in that he was disrespectful and unfriendly. He made comments that one patient ‘wanted shooting’ and that another was ‘soft’.
The Panel further heard that Peter Collins failed to properly account for his time for large portions of the working day on a number of occasions. He also deliberately failed to use the patient records systems to keep accurate and contemporaneous records, including indicating on one occasion that he had provided treatment to a patient who had died several months earlier.
Panel Chair Gillian Fleming commented:
“The proved facts disclose serious attitudinal failings by Mr Collins against a background of concerns and issues which were raised with him by his line manager, without any noticeable improvement in his attitude towards colleagues and patients.
“The record keeping failures are capable of remediation but the attitudinal failings and dishonesty are less easily remediable….The Panel finds that the evidence of Mr Collins at this hearing and in his Trust interview displayed a lack of insight and self-reflection and an unwillingness to accept that his conduct may not have been appropriate.”
The Panel decided the most appropriate action was to strike Peter Collins from the Register.
Peter Collins was present and represented at the hearing.
