I thought I would share a little bit of podiatric biomechanics history with my colleagues from around the world.

I had a patient come in this week to my office wanting a new pair of prescription foot orthoses to replace her 27 year old pair of orthoses which were no longer working for her. When I looked at the box and positive casts, I realized they came from my former professor, John Weed, DPM, who had taught us podiatric biomechanics as students and who was very influential in my development as a podiatrist.

The patient absolutely loved Dr. Weed and his foot orthoses he made for her that she had worn all these years. This patient had been one of the many individuals who had been an active patient of Dr. Weed when he passed away suddenly in October 1992. Dr. Weed's office was in San Jose, California, which is about a 2 hour drive from my practice in Sacramento.

I asked if I could keep the box and her positive casts for my lectures and she gratefully wanted me to keep them to preserve the memory of Dr. Weed. I have removed her name from the casts and box. I believe the positive casts and orthoses were made by Root Orthotic Lab.

    Pretty cool!

Thanks Kevin. Amazing little moment in life for you. Image just threw me back to the hundreds of hours I've spent in the past making such models.

Can be said that after wearing 27 years a STJN type of foot orthotic she will start to wear a SALRE one ?
    Is only history ?
