Since Jones Fractures have such a high likelihood of refracture, many precautions are used routinely before a return to activity. Hard plastic orthotics that are as close to total contact as possible with a slight accommodation in the fracture area and high lateral phalange is crucial. I have patients wear these out of 3/16" poly and classic Root Balanced. I then used a stable work boot (possibly steel shanks) and daily Kinesio tape to stable the midfoot. The patient should continue to do contrast bathing daily to flush out the normal bone edema, and ice pack for 20 minutes twice daily to reduce inflammation buildup. If there is any chance of delayed union, a bone stim is used for the next 3 months. Careful diet with attention to calcium and Vit D is important. Good luck. Dr Rich Blake
