    Hi All,
I have just had a 32 week pregnant lady in for a consult with plantar fasciitis. She mentioned she would love to get a foot massage/reflexology but can't due to her pregnancy.....I queried this & she said she had been told that pressing certain pressure points while pregnant is harmful to the baby.
I have not heard this before and can only think that it is something to do with pressure points causing premature labour?
I would love to know if there is a scientific basis for this or is it fable? My patient is desperate for a foot rub so I told her I would seek out the knowledge from the pod community & get back to her.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

    Kind regards, Lisa

Someone told her a furphy. There is not even close to being any scientific evidence for it.

I just mentioned this to the wife and she responded with a few expletives ....things like "what a load a bull****" ... "all nonsense" ... "the opposite will be the case - its going to help lymph drainage" ... I vaguely recall having to massage her feet many times during her pregancy ... the Arena'ettes turned out fine.

The problem is, even though it is a load of nonsense .... and you went ahead and there was an unrelated adverse outcome associated with the pregnancy ... you going to get blamed!

l wish a knowledge person had told my wife that...3 children and every pregnancy if you asked how she was feeling, was answered with "Better after you rub my feet"

Amazing how sore your hands can get from all that massaging, only one child came early by about 3 weeks, the rest right on time.

Why not ask her the scientific qualifications of the person who gave her that advice and which 'pressure points' on the foot is she referring to?

However, Craig's point is good - the placebo effect works in reverse, that's how witch doctors make their living!

    All the best

    Thanks for the info.

Maybe I should have asked myself why I wasn't having foot rubs to bring on my late babies!

David, you are a good, good man & I will have to tell my husband of your heroic foot-rubbing deeds now I am pregnant with our 3rd baby.

Bill, I actually did ask her where she received the info from (as I had never heard this & certainly have had plenty of foot rubs while pregnant) and she said some of the 'reflexology' people have refused to do her feet given that she is pregnant and that got her worried. Then other friends said they had heard the same thing, etc.

I told her I would put this out to the greater pod community whose knowledge & intellect far surpass my own. Basically, I will pass on what Craig has said...being her 1st baby she will probably err on the side of caution. Such a shame with HK being the land of cheap foot rubs!
