    Hi All,

I have always been under the impression that we should not be applying Salicylic acid to patients when they are pregnant or breast-feeding. However I have no evidence-base for this.

A pregnant patient of mine is desperate for me to use Sal. acid on her VPs as she has had so much success previously with it. She refuses cryo or any other more suitable treatments.

    Next question:

Same patient wants to sign a consent form so that I will use the Sal. acid whilst she's pregnant and beyond. Where would I stand legally on this? You can see why I need to be sure about the dangers (or otherwise) of Salicylic acid during this time.

Thank you for any advice you can give me on this.

Salicylic acid is classed as Group C risk classification for use during pregnancy - this means Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the fetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women, or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. ... ie Safety for use during pregnancy has not been established.

I am just killing time at LAX and was doing a search for something else and came across this medline entry that made me laugh:

Gesslein M. [Wart removed, foot lost] MMW Fortschr Med. 2006 Apr 27;148(17):12-3. German.

There was no abstract and not sure what its really about, but looks like the foot was "lost" .... do not know if they used sal acid.

If sal acid cannot be used, explain to your patient why.Make sure she is not breast feeding, either.

Can treating Verrucae with cryotherapy during pregnancy be harmful?

    Thanks
