I wanted to ask if I have to apply for planning permission /apply for a lawful development certificate in order to develop a private podiatry practice from my home. Has anyone had experience of this and any problems?

If are in the UK you need change of use from your council.

There are many factors to consider if using your own home for a business but it may not be necessary to apply for a change of use.
Many people run businesses from their home and have not needed to apply for a change of use. For example hairdressers, osteopaths and others.
If you are a single handed practitioner, who has room for parking and are unlikely to cause a nuisance to your neighbours for example, may mean you have no need to change the use of your home.
Talk to your local planning department for advice.

 

1st consider if this really is a good idea

Economically it might be , but there is more to life than just economics

I agree with Mike Weber, if they know where you live they'll be knocking on your kitchen window while you're getting lumps out of your Sunday roast dinner gravy, and worse....

 

It may say on your deeds that medical use is acceptable, but as Mike and David say there are pitfalls. I've had a clinic in my house for 29years, and for many of those people had to enter my house to access the clinic. The clinic has it's own door now which is so much better but sometimes patients need the loo!!!
