  3. Some years ago there was an undergraduate study which inoculated socks with yeast and then investigated the effects of machine washing with detergent versus microwave. As I recall, the machine washing was pretty ineffective while a short burst in the microwave- might have been 10-20 seconds, was effective at denaturing the yeast.

    We have been using a "brand" of this type of device now for some time. The results of that study are un-surprising.
