This is a long post but I hope people will take the time to read it. It is a story of bad science, psychology, snake oil, and above all money which is stunning in scale and scope. It is happening right now, and it has resulted in the death of tens, or even hundres of thousands! It serves as a cautionary tale to all of us and I feel that all of us have an obligation to know that such things go on. Even if (as here) there is nothing we can actually DO I think it is almost a crime to turn a blind eye.

This is a chapter From Ben Goldacres book. He has taken the unusual step of making it freely available online, for free. Such largess deserves a few minutes of your time.

    Kind regards
    Robert

Robert and I have spoken before about our mutual appreciation of Dr Ben Goldacre - the man is a legend.

His book, from which the above chapter is taken, should be mandatory reading for all undergrads in my opinion. It helped my critical analysis skills no end, and at just £3.57 from Amazon.co.uk is an effin bargain.

I'm sure the irony of a book 'against' the vitamin pill industry having a supplement (ie extra chapter online) isn't wasted on Dr Goldarce.

I've nearly finished his book after having it on the shelf for weeks, brilliant book.

    Hi
I too have just finished reading `Bad Science` by Ben Goldacre. It is well worth reading and I would thoroughly recommend it. His book discusses much of the `snake oil `pseudo-science etc. and the lack of evidence base in many areas of alternative therapies. It isn't only alternative medicine that he is critical of but some of the big pharmacetical companies too. The section on MRSA and MMR were fascinating but the HIV and vitamin pills was really shocking. The website www.badscience.com (I think) is brillant.

This quote from the article "Except a consultant podiatric surgeon is just a chiropodist who has decided to charge a bit more" isn't just inaccurate, it's a downright lie.

Lets hope he bothers to dig a bit deeper when carrying out his other research.......

Problem is, that he now stands guilty of 'Pots Calling Kettles Black' as far as his research is concerned.

The natural reaction of the 'non-thinkers' is to dismiss the rest of his research as flawed.

    Any comment Dr.Goldacre?

  9. What is a consultant podiatric surgeon? That is, who regulates the professional examinations required to become a podiatric surgeon in the UK?
