A new set of guidelines were launched recently in Australia. The report relates to concerns about body image asking fashion magazines and advertisers to use realistic images of models and disclose when images have been digitally manipulated. It calls on retailers to stock a variety of sizes that reflects demand from customers. Support from the government has been called for and in the event the voluntary industry guidelines are not taken up then the government should consider a mandatory code. Further the report also recommends the government consult with body image experts and the textile clothing and footwear industry to ensure sizing labels do not encourage unhealthy weight loss. Should the voluntary industry guidelines be accepted then in future the fashion industry, media and advertisers would use only models aged over 16 with a range of body shapes and sizes.

That would be scary in this community, where "about average" could mean anywhere from 40 to 70 lbs overweight. BMI neutral, now, that's where it's at. No cankles or caggles, please and definitely no one that looks like someone strung out on a 2 year meth run.

so retailers are not stocking clothes that fit their customers?

sounds like a bad business model to me.

and why is it the government's responsibility to regulate fashion?
if they want to promote healthy lifestyles, why wouldn't the focus be on healthy choices rather than making clothes to restrict choice?
that would be like outlawing petrol/gas to prevent speeding deaths. . .

    Hi all!
Glad to see peolpe paying attention to the news.

I was actually on the Parliamentary Advisory Board on Body Image.
We assisted in the development on the code.

Research over the past decade or so has seen body image become THE biggest concern affecting young people, leading to such things as depression, eating disorders (including binge eating and obesity) and suicide.

About time action was taken on the media portraying unrealistic perceptions of normal on young minds!

Although the code is voluntary, hopefully it starts a trend.
