A new set of guidelines were launched recently in Australia. The report relates to concerns about body image asking fashion magazines and advertisers to use realistic images of models and disclose when images have been digitally manipulated. It calls on retailers to stock a variety of sizes that reflects demand from customers. Support from the government has been called for and in the event the voluntary industry guidelines are not taken up then the government should consider a mandatory code. Further the report also recommends the government consult with body image experts and the textile clothing and footwear industry to ensure sizing labels do not encourage unhealthy weight loss. Should the voluntary industry guidelines be accepted then in future the fashion industry, media and advertisers would use only models aged over 16 with a range of body shapes and sizes.
