Diabetic who do not drink any alcohol - risk?

I was intrigued to listen to an Edinburgh-based diabetic consultant speak about diabetics who drink no alcohol at all possibly being more at risk of diabetic neuropathic changes than those who drink a little or moderately. The consultant had been exploring a range of factors including Vitamin D levels in Northern areas where darkness prevails in winter, B12 levels and sleep disruptions, etc.
The community I live and work within has a strong religious culture alongside the usual alcoholism issues of rural communities.
I wondered if anyone has noticed a link between tea-totallers and diabetic neuropathy or even if any screening systems record alcohol consumption levels or abstinence.
Any ideas or comments?
