Having recently graduated with a Podiatry degree, as well as previously having a Degree in Sports science I was wondering what the differing career opportunities there were to merge the two?

Having a passion for sport and a keen interest in biomechanics, I would prefer to go into a sporting field rather than the clinical side and I am keen to know what differing employment avenues are out there.

I have even been looking into possible opportunities in fields such as footwear design as this is also a field that interests me. I like the idea of working for a big sports company in the research and development of their products.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your two main options for location are the Uk and Oz.
As far as working in design or R and D you will probably need further quals in Design and/or Research unless working for a really small company, in which case the risks in terms of not making it are obviously magnified.

As a first step, why not write to Nike UK, outlining what you would like to do and seeing if you could take a look around their base (which is still in Washington Tyne and Wear, I believe)? They use to be very happy to help and advise in days gone by.

 

Sorry to burst your bouble, I worked for Nike in UK approached them as a podiatrist interested in exactly what you are talking of....the position I was offered was not far off a sales assistant. Nike UK headquarters are in central london, Nike europe headquarters are in netherlands and word headquarters are in oregon USA. Designing footwear for a mjor sporting brand you would need design qualifications and you would also probably need "to know someone". Good luck though..... again sorry to be barer of bad news.
