A patient of mine has had a mosaic verruca for the last 2 years. we have tried Thuja, cryo, sylasilic acid, silver nitrate and failed. I now want to put her on Duct Tape therapy but I have no idea how to go about this.
- How long do you leave the tape for?
- What are the potential complications/side effects?
- What is the potential success rate?
- Does debriding the verruca help with the treatment?

Thanks for this Simon. It seems for adults the treatment would be 7days on and one off for a period of 2 months or until resolution. It's a long shot.

Duct tape does not work for VP's

 

Hi All
sometimes I despair treating VP's because not a lot seems to work. I now wonder if salicylic acid preparations make matters worse by encouraging the spread of the lesions and I am increasingly reluctant to use these preparations.
Needling seems to be promising but few professionals seem to use this method of treatment, at least here in the UK. I haven't used needling yet as there is very little published literature on its effectiveness. I'll stick to cryo for the time being.

It`s true there isn`t much in the way of recent or decent evidence for needling.....BUT, the success rates that I have been getting since using this method is undeniably high. Just today, a very happy GP sent me photos of her VP free foot where there was mosaic VP. The referrals are now coming in :cool:

i got this def from a web page

'Fractionation/ needling involves numbing the verruca using local anaesthetic then piercing the skin using small sterile needles. The aim of this is to induce an immune response to the area. A scab forms after the treatment which takes about 4 weeks to drop off.'

how does this different from "debridement" of VP?
how would you know how far down to pierce?

Yep, follow the link that Admin 2 and Mike (who has great taste in music) Weber have provided. There is a LOT to trawl through (14 pages), but well worth digesting all the helpful info. Best tip I received; puncture through, with bleeding occuring at each puncture, until there is no more resistance....

This Percutaneous Immune System Stimulation ;) easy method is very different to debriding the lesion as we are puncturing through to the subcutaneous tissue. Are you thinking of abrading the surface of the VP to cause capillary bleeding? Parton & Somerville (1994) suggested there is a link with this and promoting cell mediated immunity. However, needling take this premise further; the theory being we are implanting the virus below the dermis to acheive the desired immune response.
