flicking through the tabloids today I note that the West Midlands college of FHP's proudly boast on their logo to be "caring for the worlds feet". Which countries would someone qualifying from this establishment be able to tout their trade in?

 

Probably no problem over here. They have 6 month, 1 year and 2 year foot therapist course (only pallitive care, some go on to do extra diabetes type courses) which work in the Government run health system in private practice not sure anybody really cares if you have done a course or not to be honest.

You are probably right I’m afraid. Low cost before high quality is standard. Hopefully this situation will improve with time as podiatry is a new profession in Sweden.

For those not familiar with the situation, here is the overall picture:

Foot therapist (couple of month training – 2 years education) – care paid by the government (slight difference between districts)

Podiatrist (3 year full time university) – patient pay full fee from own pocket. No government funding

Yes, a podiatrist can jump on to the foot therapists contract however, then its bye bye to orthotics and MSK. Just Diabetes and RA palliative care. All orthotics MUST be referred to Ortothist otherwise wave your contract good bye. Since getting this contract mean you will not be able to practice podiatry there is no reason getting it except if you settle with nail care.

Hopefully the government will change their attitude someday…
