England's mastery of sportsmanship knocks Aussie cricketers into a cocked hat.

In a wonderful Christmas display of goodwill, England allowed Australia to win back the Ashes at the WACCA. After the magnificent batting display by Collingwood, the superb stroke play by Pietersen and latterly Cook's century there can be no doubt whatsoever that had they so wished, England could have taken the series in a whitewash. If further proof were needed, the captain allowed Harmison and Pannesar to put on 40 for the last wicket, just to prove that the much vaunted bowling of McGrath would not have frightened a fly - when all is said and done, bouncing a last man spin bowler is a little beyond the pale! Likewise, Shane Warne's spin was easily dealt with by the tail-enders as well as causing him to throw the ball in frustration at Pietersen.

Such noble generosity of spirit is an example to us all at this time of year and it gives all Pommies a warm feeling inside to think of 'them down-under' bashing their bellies with beer and burgers on the beach to celebrate not only Christmas but what they have been allowed to fondly imagine is 'their victory'.

Never mind lads, have a slab and a chunder with me, whilst I have a pint or two of Old Peculier to the health (and retirement) of Ponting and Warney; but be afraid - very afraid - for 2009!

Have a great Christmas to our Aussie cousins from the North-East of England. Its minus 4 degrees, frosty and bright. The fires are roaring, and the Black Sheep is abundant for Christmas Day.

 

The fires are roaring here as well, except it not the house fire .... the whole state is on fire .... Warne has also announced he is to retire.

 

Just to clarify, Black Sheep is a fine English ale, brewed in North Yorkshire.

I didn't want to get any of our New Zealander posters too excited! :D

On other country can 'pull defeat out of the jaws of victory' as well as we can.

Will New Zealand challenge this? - I understand they are having an attempt at the title in France next year.

It is true that your supremacy (this year) seems clear. My theory is that when all the convicts were deported "down under" a few hundred years ago it was only natural that they should include all the people good hitting folk with blunt objects or throwing rocks and that the genetics have come good a few generations later. :eek:

Ponting outhought Fletcher and Flintoff. Oz outplayed England in every department. A fine highnote on which Warney and McGrath can end two great cricketing careers.

England have been well and truly stung and are thirsting for revenge in 2009.

If you're coming over to Pommieland DaVinci, let me know and I'll try to get tickets for Edgbaston.
