Hi everyone,

I am currently about to complete my bachelor of health science degree with majors in medical biotechnology and also nutrition, i have come to realize my degree is sort of dead ended unless i go on to do honors and a phd...

So i have been thinking about a career in podiatry for a long time.. even before i started this degree but just never went on to peruse it.. i would just like to know what other peoples opinions out there are for working as a podiatrist in Australia

Is it worth me committing another 4 years to another bachelors degree? im 23 this year.. My initial plan was to study medicine however its way too competitive to get into and i want to do something where my science knowledge can be used but at the same time i can help people, another thing that attracted me to podiatry is the flexibility in lifestyle .. and also the potential to earn good $

Also coming from a science based degree is the podiatry course hard to pass? what is the content like?

I love being a podiatrist and have for the past 20 years. Even though I only work in the area a day a week, my role in the public system gave me so many other opportunities and skills. BUT, I think a lot of new graduates go into it a little naive to just how many toenails you will cut, just how many stories you will hear and are a little jaded with how long it takes you to get really good at the area you want to ie: High risk, paeds, sports etc. The role of a generalist podiatrist is vast and great and like any jobs, there are good and bad things.

Rather than looking at what you will get out of it, I'd suggest you look at what you will have to do to get those things. That will give you a better answer to whether the 4 years is worth it. Spend some time with a podiatrists if you haven't already. It can either be a job or a career, just depends on what you want though.

 

Of course there is always a degree in Pedorthics at SCU...you will never have to cut toe nail promise!

And l dont know any Certified Pedorthist that dont have a job.

 

Being a podiatrist is an excellent career choice, and it is something that all pre-health students should consider. It is an option among many, but for me it is the best choice. Yes, spend some time with the podiatrists and interact with them. :)
