Hi Guys,

A referral letter from an orthopedic surgeon regarding a 10y/o boy I saw in clinic last week mentioned Kidner's syndrome.

Did a quick google search and couldn't find anything on it.. searched this forum too and that didn't really help.

Just wondering what it was exactly.

The kid has hypermobility syndrome and generalised low muscle tone. Getting pain medial ankle and knee which is fairly obviously down to his super floppy gait pattern. The consultant said he was developing an accessory navicular too. Gonna refer him into local NHS podopaeds clinic.

I too just did a quick Google search and nothing (which is extremely unusual). I have not heard of it before either. Is there a typo in the referral letter as to what the syndrome is?

 

This should help...

The Kidner procedure is used for dealing with an accessory navicular and re-attaching the posterior tibial tendon to the navicular body. It is commonly performed on adolescents.

Hence, the term "Kidner's syndrome" is probably an orthopaedic reference to what we would call a painful accessory navicular.

Orthotic the hell out of it, and refer back to have it excised if still painful.

That makes more since. I have heard of the Kidner procedure.

 

The Kidner procedure was originally done as a flatfoot procedure. Kidner thought it would change the pull of the posterior tibial muscle so that it would function better.
Years later he printed a retraction in JBJS. :sinking: It was a paragraph long hidden somewhere in the end.

I don't have the references, I wish I did.

Much clearer now.

In the letter he also put "radiographs show possibly the beggingings of an accessory navicular...", which i guess might have been a little more useful if i'd have put that in the first post...
