New clinic keeping staff and students on their toes

A new local clinic is giving Bachelor of Podiatry students from the University of Newcastle Central Coast campus essential practical training and providing a free health service for staff and students.

The University Podiatry Clinic in Wyong is now open, giving patients access to high quality care from students under the guidance of a fully qualified podiatrist.

The service is free of charge for University and TAFE staff and students. Members of the public can also access the service at low cost.

Dr Vivienne Chuter from the University's School of Health Sciences said foot problems affect people of all ages and can greatly impact on their daily life.

"On average we walk 10,000 steps each day, which over a lifetime is the equivalent to walking around the planet more than four times," Dr Chuter said.

"At some stage, between 75 and 80 per cent of the adult population will have a foot problem and often these problems can be easily fixed by a visit to a Podiatrist."

The clinic has the lastest equipment and caters for all foot and lower limb-related problems across every age group.

"The podiatry clinic is a great opportunity for staff, students and the local community to access low cost, quality health care at the same time providing a fantastic learning experience for our future podiatrists," Dr Chuter said.

The clinic offers heavily discounted appointments with reduced fees on general treatments including nail treatment and surgery, diabetes care, biomechanical assessments, and orthotic therapy.

Patients attending the clinic are assured of receiving the best possible care in a friendly and relaxed teaching enviroment while making an invaluable contribution to the education of University of Newcastle Podiatry students.

Situated at Kanwal Medical Centre adjacent to Wyong Hospital, the clinic is open from 9.30am to 5.30pm on Tuesday and between 9.00am and 5.00pm on Thursday and Friday. Appointments are available now by calling (02) 4392 2756.
