I am very interested in celebrating my 50th Birthday next March by offering my podiatry skills in a leprosy project overseas. Does anyone have any good contacts - I have been in touch with Lepra but they seem to need 6 weeks min which is too long out of my practice.

Would love any advice or suggestions.

When I turned 50 a few of my friends rented a limo and we went out for a dinner/party. Great time.

Hello Salanne,

A handful of Aussie podiatrists, including myself, have respectively spent time in India with a leprosy focused organisation called the Bombay Leprosy Project. I couldn't recommend the staff more highly for their professionalism, foward thinking nature, compassion and hospitality. Their website is:

Mumbai is perhaps not the most desired travel destination at the moment. Despite apparent drawbacks the experience from a professional and personal viewpoint was nonetheless priceless.

If you're interested in Brazil, I could put you in touch with a number of possibilities.
Easiest from my point of view would be at the Lauro de Souza Lima Institute here in Bauru - but there's projects in Rio and Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) and the Northeast. How long are you thinking of staying?

One of our current 2nd year podiatry students at AUT University, New Zealand has been awarded two grants to attend the leprosy clinic in Nepal this X-mas. This is a great opportunity for the student and will come back with a wealth of experience.

 

The New Hope Rural Community Trust in India does lots of work with people with leprosy. The project started with leprosy and now covers a wide range of other needs. They are based in Orissa in small towns and it is all run by local people.
