I have two patients scheduled for 2nd toe arthrodesis surgery. One is taking Plavix (Clopidogrel), and the other is taking Effient (Prasugrel). Naturally, I ask the patient's prescribing physician if they would permit the patient to discontinue these meds at least 5 days pre-op. For these two cases, when I contacted the patient's cardiologists, they both stated they would prefer not to discontinue the anticoagulants and asked if I could perform the surgery with the patients continuing their anticoagulant therapy.
What has been your experience in performing this type of procedure with a patient continuing their Plavix or Effient? Any tips or pearls?
    Thanks.
