Podiatrist breaches code for jabbing patient with steroid without warning over risks

A podiatric surgeon who injected a diabetic patient with a corticosteroid without warning about the risks, breached the code of patients’ rights, the deputy health and disability commissioner has found.

The woman, Mrs A, had a history of type two diabetes and wound breakdown, and was at an increased risk of tissue breakdown.

In 2007, Mrs A underwent ankle fusion surgery on her left ankle, which left her with a long-standing scar, the report by deputy commissioner Rose Wall says.

In August 2011, Mrs A developed problems with her right ankle, so she saw the podiatric surgeon, Mr B, whom diagnosed her with peroneal tendonitis of the right foot and injected her with the corticosteroid Kenacort and a local anaesthetic.
