For various reasons I don't normally visit nursing homes but a regular patient was admitted to one, and I was asked by family t continue treatment.
On the last visit I found, as part of my pre-treatment assessment, that he now had an irregular pulse. I documented this on my notes. There was no mention of this in his notes and he wasn't having any drugs related to it.
On my way out the manger spoke to me and asked how Mr Smith's feet were. I said that they were fine but he now had an irregular pulse and I was going to report my findings to the GP. They dismissed my concerns by saying that "He is known to have an irregular pulse" and "the pulse at the wrist is different to that at the ankle, because the Doplma used is different ( ??)". I said that he had IMO an irregular pulse, that it fell within my remit, and I was going to flag it up because that was my responsibility, and they could think what they liked about it.
(Later on I wrote to the GP and informed them of my findings.)
My question is, why after all these years do I still find ignorant people who can't/won't understand the remit/Scope of Practice of Chiropodists/Podiatrists ?
Or is that a silly question ?
Rant over :)
