Hello everyone,

I'm graduating at the end of the year from LaTrobe University, Melbourne, Australia. I have plans to work through 2009 and half of 2010 and then spend 12months overseas.
I am considering settling in Italy for a period of time but am not sure if my qualification is recognised in Italy. I would like to know if this is possible? Does anyone have any experience working as a podiatrist in Italy? Is it difficult to find work?
Could anyone give me a little more information regarding working overseas or possibly point me in the right direction.
Hope to hear from someone...;)
Micco.

Horoo,
Contact the Australian Podiatry Council http://www.apodc.com.au/index.shtml and they will be able to provide information regarding what countries you can work in. Don't forget you need to meet language requirements. Podiatry is recognised in France but my french is not the ebst so I would not meet the language standards. -

I was just wondering how you were going on news about working in Italy because I am in the same situation. Im having a bit of trouble finding out whether or not we are entitled. I hope your search is going well.
-
I hope you are having some good results with your research...please let us know where you get the information about other countries when you find it. I am curious as to what parts of Asia and Europe are in need of podiatry.

Still struggling at this stage, but I just spent a month in Italy on holiday and may have some contacts. I will keep looking into this but so far I think the language barrier is the main concern.

Although I am not Italian, I have meet fellow Italian podiatrists in different professional meetings. Italian and Spanish podiatrists have strong bonds through the Association Européenne des Podologues (AEP).
Podiatry is a university diploma in Italy like Uk BSch Podiatry. Practice is private and it is mainly focused on conservative treatments. You can address to Associazione Italiana di Podologia for further information. -
Italy is the country where they actually laugh at you when you put on a seat belt! So you tentatively refrain from wearing it, as 4 others in the car aren't..and your'e squashed in the Fiat anyway...and couldnt' reach it if you tried.
To get to a night club on time... they drive at 100 mph, cut corners on the wrong side of the road. The seat belt looks quite good at this time.
The point of the story is that my guess is that podiatry in Italy is laid back. Maybe sterilizing is done in a Miele dishwasher on cold cycle without detergent. Maybe to save the environment, scalpel blades are re-used. But the gowns and glasses are probably Versace.

Javier, get off your politically correct high horse.
My mother was italian and born in the village of San Marco. I cannot stand 'racism'.
All I asked for was some small licence at generalisation, and the use of stereotypes to come to the conclusion of a GUESS in jest. Do you want me to use more smile faces???
My quote was..."The point of the story is that my guess is that podiatry in Italy is laid back"
And I do speak italian....capisce? So if I erred in jesticular generalisation and stereotypical use, you erred in incorrect assumption.

Physiotherapist (Masters) & Podiatrist & 50% Italian origin -
Are Australian podiatry organizations (professional bodies and universities) helping to develop podiatry in other countries? 25 years ago, faculty members from NYCPM helped Spanish podiatrists to develop a strong surgery program. This relationship still continues and there are surgery programs shared between NYCPM and Spanish Podiatry Schools. Spanish podiatry have helped to improve or establish podiatry programs in Portugal, Brazil and Cuba. And we have close contact with Italy, France and Argentina mainly.
If you think Italian podiatry is laid back compared to Australia and you have an Italian origin, you could lobby with Australian podiatry organizations to create shared programs. -
While not the same country when I moved to Sweden from Oz, I had to contact a government orgainisation. Them not an association said it was ok to begin to practice.
There maybe some parts of your day to day treatment such as xray and the use of local anesthic that you will not be licenced for.
Also this may and will change when the EU finalise their regulations to Podiatry in the EU.
Also be very conservative with time when asking questions to Euro governement and associations. ie start sending emails now.. A tax file number took 6 months to come thru.

Thanks for the advice Michael, I'll look into it a little further.

Hi Ron,
I have been researching podiatry in Italy for quite some time as it is somewhere I would like to spend time working. I don't know how much you know in relation to the profession in Italy but from what I can understand the role of a podiatrist in Italy differs from Australia and other countries from that matter.
I am under the impression that as an Italian trained podiatrist you are limited to what you can do/treat etc, for example I think many of the biomechanical cases we would normally treat clinically are referred onto an orthopaedic specialist of sorts who deals more specifically with these cases.
These differences, I assume, are due to undergraduate experience and the structure of the course. I don't think the profession is laid back or lazy, instead Italian podiatrists possibly play a different role in the community.
Cheers. -
This is an explanation of the formation of the podologo student in Italy.
My language is french but I speak a little italian and english.
I used the Voilà translator to help me.
France and Italy are neighbours but we don't know exactly what are the Italian podiatrists/podologo competences!
