In my private practice I currently use a modern MELAG autoclave.

I was recently speaking with a Doctor whom I know. They informed me that they are using the "15 MIN" quick program cycle for their instruments, as it is "sufficient for their needs". They are using wrapped instruments.

I currently use the "Universal Program" cycle for Podiatry, sterilisation at 134 degrees, operating time 25 min, drying time 25 min. This is described in MELAG manual for "mixed loads, long, simple hollow bodies".

I notice that the "Quick program" option on my MELAG sterilises at 134 degrees, however operating time is reduced to 15 mins, drying time 10 mins. (It also, however, stipluates in the MELAG manual that this program is to be used for 'unwrapped' items only). This program is described in the MELAG manual for "simple, solid instruments, transmission instruments, simple hollow bodies".

The "universal program" takes 50mins all up (25min/25min). Although the 'quick' program is stipulated for unwrapped items only in the manual, is anyone using this for Podiatry instruments ???

Clearly, I am trying to see if it is possible, or not, to cut down on my sterilisation time.

You should follow the recommendations as set out in the specific Autoclave manual. For packaged and wrapped instruments this will be longer than unwrapped. However, as soon as you remove unwrapped instruments from the sterilizer they are no longer sterile!
