Objective Our study is aimed to determine the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy(ESWT) in the treatment of stage Ⅰ posterior tibial tendon dysfunction(PTTD). Methods A total of 12 patients with the diagnosis of stage Ⅰ PTTD were included in the study and 4 sessions of ESWT were applied(1 000-2 000 shocks, 0.10-0.18 m J/mm~2, 8 Hz, 1 session per week). Visual analog scale(VAS) scores and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society(AOFAS) were assessed before and at 4 weeks after the treatment. Results VAS scores were significantly lower(P0.05) and AOFAS score increased(P0.05) after 4 weeks ESWT treatment. Conclusion ESWT utilization in treatment of stage Ⅰ PTTD was found to be effective on reducing pain, and improving functional activities.
