Sleep Quality in Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Objective. To assess sleep quality in a population of patients with diabetic foot ulcers.

Methods. This was an exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality in 60 patients with diabetes mellitus and foot ulcers.

Results. Seventeen (28.3%) patients had a global PSQI score less than 5, indicating that they were good sleepers, while 43 (71.7%) patients were considered poor sleepers. The patients reported going to bed between 9:00 pm and 11:00 pm (n = 40, 66.70%), taking from 16 minutes to 30 minutes to fall asleep (n = 25, 41.70%), and waking up after 4 hours to 5 hours of sleep (n = 40, 66.70%).

Conclusion. Patients with diabetic foot ulcers have poor sleep quality.

Objective: Identify sleep quality and related factors in patients with diabetic ulcer.

Method: This research design used cross sectional study with a sample of 97 diabetic ulcer patients in a clinic wound care. The research instruments consist of Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to assess the stress level, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Questionnaire to identify the sleep quality.

Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between subjective sleep quality and sleep quality measured using PSQI (p: 0.001). Factors that affected sleep quality were income (p: 0.014), stress levels (p: 0.001), medications (p: 0.026), pain levels (p: 0.048), and diet (p: 0.009).

Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the importance of conducting sleep quality assessment with the associated factors is to overcome the sleep problems in diabetic patients.

Diabetic foot is associated with a low quality of life since physical disabilities, mood disturbances and psychological disorders are frequent. One of the most important biological processes to ensure quality of life is sleep. Sleep disorders can impair glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus or even cause long-term type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study is to carry out a scoping review about the association between sleep cycle disorders and diabetic foot. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, PEDro, Cochrane Library, SCIELO and EMBASE databases were chosen for the search and the following terms were used: "diabetic foot","sleep*","rest-activity","mood" and"behavior". All the studies should include outcome variables about sleep and diabetic foot. Finally, 12 articles were selected, all of whichwere observational. The most frequent variables were those regarding diabetic foot ulcer aspects and diabetic neuropathy on one side, and obstructive sleep apnea, sleep duration and sleep quality on the other side. The results suggest that there is a possible association between obstructive sleep apnea and the presence or history of diabetic foot ulcers. No direct associations between sleep quality or sleep duration and diabetic foot or diabetic foot ulcer variables have been found.
