Hi there. I have a 20 year old male patient with a long history of infected nails and I intend to undertake total resections with phenolisation on B/1st nls. He has Guillain Barre Syndrome, diagnosed several years ago. Whilst acknowledging this is an inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy I cannot see this as being a contra indication for nail surgery - unless anyone knows differently? All pulses palpable, skin texture good and 10gm MF sites all good. Cheers. Chris.

    Hi Chris,
I can't see this condition as a contraindication to nails surgery, but if you have any concerns, it might be a good idea to check with his GP before you go ahead.

    regards

The only absolute contraindication to nail surgery is ischaemia.

Unless he is also on an auto-immune drugs to counteract the GB symptoms eg immunoglobulin, there are really no other issues to contend with.

Just bare in mind infection risk if on chemotherapy.

I recently did PNA's on a patient with Guillain Barrie with no adverse reactions. In fact she healed rather quickly and much better than I was expecting, however she did get more post op pain than the norm which is worth warning your patient about.

One sulcus re-grew which I don't think is due to the Guillain Barrie.
